Bears at Nestle Inn

Every year the Nestle Inn is visited by the occasional bear.  The Smokies provide a natural habitat for a healthy Black Bear population.  Even though so many visitors come to Gatlinburg, the city itself is not very large and is surrounded by the Smoky Mountain National Park with forests on 3 sides.  bear6.JPG (82026 bytes)

We are just a  5  minutes minute stroll from the center of downtown Gatlinburg, traffic light #6, yet we have a unique setting, as we are the last motel on our road, and are located directly at the base of the Smokies, therefore, we receive many visits from bears, foxes, raccoons, etc.

We had numerous bear visits during this season and are going strong again this year due to a mild winter.   During the year 1997, guests and employees recorded at least 62 bear sightings on the property, we even had to chase one bear out of the heated pool!   Guests are asked to never feed the bears by the US Park Service.

1999 Nestle Inn Bear Sightings On Property

Our most frequent bear visitors have been a mother bear and her 3 cubs who have visited the property through out the spring and summer.   Here she is at the bottom of the hill, next to the creek with her cubs. cb162599.JPG (51966 bytes)

The mother was undisturbed by the noises our family made as we looked on but the cubs were a little shyer and went for the tree.
At the click of the camera the cubs shot up the tree.   They were up 40 feet in the blink of an eye.  This fellow looked back,   amazed at how far and fast he climbed. cb362599.JPG (45014 bytes)

This adult bear took a 15 minute breather in the rock garden above M204 & 205.  I wonder what he thought of my bonsai trees? He is behind the large bell
Here's a closeup shot!  Yes, my heart was pounding.  He really seemed to enjoy the occasional bell sounding in the breeze. bearshad.JPG (110445 bytes)

Guests are asked to never feed the bears by the US Park Service.   Just quietly observe all wild life from a distance.

August 1, 1999, 10pm - Adult bear at courtyard on the other side of creek.   Most of the group from the Full Gospel Baptist Church of Huntsville, Alabama, were outside in the courtyard and got a good look at bear on their last night here.  Trey and his friends had been catching crawfish in creek - may be she wanted some too!.   We tried to get pictures but you've heard about a polar bear in the snow, well, just the opposite is true of a black bear at midnight.

July 29, 1999, 5:15pm - I got great picture of bear in tree. I really was not sure what it was when I first spotted her in the tree.   I couldn't figure out how she kept herself up there until I was able to examine this photo on the computer.  She's sitting on a branch!

July 24, 1999, 4pm - Mother & cubs come by for snack and attract quite a crowd.  Eventually the local PD come by and, in an effort to scare her away, scares her and the cubs up the tree at the end of M108.  We all watched for quite some time.   Mom wouldn't leave without cubs, PD wouldn't leave without her leaving and spectators wouldn't leave until the show was over.

July 20, 1999, 11pm -  The Allens from Texas say hi to bear in courtyard as they stroll back from dinner in town.  They are thrilled - were afraid they'd not see one before leaving town.

July 19, 1999, 7:15pm - Jonathan and Mr. Meridith from Florida have to wait in truck on way to Teddy Bear Chalet for mother and cubs to cross road.

July 16, 1999, 11am - An adolescent bear first tried to make keys with Miss Jewell at Dodgen's Lock & Key just across the street.  Her customer yelled him away so he came trotting across the parking lot toward the Chardan office door.   Trina heard us yell  to shut the door and got to it just in time.  The little guy, about 2 feet high, ran through the courtyard, scored a trash sack from housekeeping and took his prize up the mountain past the pool.

July 12, 1999, 3pm - Mother and cubs up the tree by the dumpster.  A patrol car spotted them, rolled to a stop and tweeted his siren at them.  That startled them all, and Mom fell out of the tree and into the dumpster while the cubs ran away.  She climbed out, shook off and ambled away.  It took me and Jonathan 5 minutes to pry the hard rubber lids back up.

July 5, 1999, 8pm - The Wallers, guests from Virginia, see large male bear while in the hot tub at the Teddy Bear Chalet!

July 3, 1999, 1:22pm - Adult bear came from Circle Drive and climbed up between M113 & M207.  Walked across to rock garden and took a rest. See pictures above.

July 1, 1999, 2pm - Travis and Dustin make friends with raccoon from Megan.  It's a mother with babies!

June 25, 1999, 4:46 - We all walk up around corner (200 feet) and see mother & cubs.  They had gone down hill to creek and we could just watch from porch railing above.  They stayed long enough for Jon to go and get digital camera so that we could get pictures.  The mother and her cubs had been in newspaper a week before and I still had not seen them personally so I was thrilled.

June 12, 1999 - We had to upright the dumpster this morning - the bears had turned it over

June 4 - 13, 1999 - Mr. Dougherty, retired firefighter from California, makes friend with raccoon at Megan cabin.  He had hand-fed the raccoon and it likes crackers and cookies best.

Bears have been here frequently this spring.  Time to start recording visits.
