| Bear
News |
 |
Each
year, a few bears visit as summertime
approaches. Pictured to the left is one of Nestle Inn's regulars.
Over the years, guests have been fortunate to have seen many
bears, as we are adjacent to the Smokies. |
|

|
Visiting the
Nestle Inn for the first time this year is the
Black-Crowned
Night Heron. |
| Range Breeds
throughout United States (except Rocky Mountain region),
from Washington, Saskatchewan, Minnesota, and New
Brunswick to southern South America. Winters in southern
half of United States. As
its name implies, this noisy bird is largely nocturnal,
beginning to forage at dusk, when other herons are on
their way to roosts. Night-herons are less likely to
nest in mixed colonies than other herons; when they do,
they often keep to themselves in a separate corner.
These birds are sluggish hunters, standing quietly for
long periods of time waiting for a frog or fish to pass
by. The picture above is from National Geographic, and
the picture below is from our cameras at The Nestle Inn
as he was standing in Baskins Creek in the Great Smoky
Mountains just outside the front door of the Nestle Inn.

| Synchronized
Fire Flies |
| Found only in 2 places on the entire planet, synchronized lightning bugs are the subject of much study right now. These delightful creatures can be found only inside the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in Elkmont, and somewhere in Asia. They live at 2200' elevation only, and when taken from their natural surroundings, they cease being synchronous! It is a scientific mystery of sorts.
